Leigh lucky in rare snow weekend road race go-ahead

A new 10k PB for Leigh, a lone Chingford League run for Philip, and clockings from the ever reliable parkruns are the only UK results that have cropped up so far from this weekend, with snowfall having caused many races to be cancelled, including the latest instalment in the club’s Rob Jackson championship, although a Dubai 5 miler was obviously far removed from all that.

Parkruns and sundry race results

With such a bumper turnout from our club at the Met League on Saturday there were understandably few Heathsiders racing elsewhere so we have just a few parkruns to report and a fifth place Goring, Woodcote and District 10k from Liam Proudlock.  We also had a team braving the freezing hills at the Sunday League cross country.

Juniors and seniors rejoice in the mud at Perivale

I almost used the headline 'Muddy Hell!' for today's race report, but it's not one of my own so I thought I'd best not. Anyway, Perivale was certainly bleak and wintry, and exceptionally muddy. Yet despite the less than temperate conditions we had another huge turnout from Heathside, and some really outstanding individual and team performances. Let me say this right up front: thank you to every single one of you who did battle with that unforgiving mud-bath of a course. It took commitment, team spirit, and a pinch of sheer bloody-mindedness, and that's what makes for a good competition. The results suggest that we took another huge step towards titles and promotions. Legends all.

Middlesex XC champs: modest medals and suspicious mud

Heathside resumed the 2012/13 cross-country season after the festive break with a predictable mud-fest at Wormwood Scrubs. To make matters worse, the muddiest parts of the course were characterised by a rather unpleasant sulphurous odour. Sometimes one can blame the runner up ahead on such occasions. This time it seemed more likely that the course itself was responsible. Despite such irritations, we managed to shake off Christmas excess in style with a solid all-round team effort, and took home a modest medal haul to boot.

Festive results round-up

A belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.  While most folk were on the sofa, drinking red wine out the bottle and watching their new Only Fools and Horses DVD box set, some of you were out running, you wonderful human beings, you.

Ally Pally Met League madness - joyful and triumphant

There was a massive Heathside turn out on Saturday afternoon for the last Met league of 2012, not surprisingly really, as, happily for us, it was based right on our doorstep.  Whether fired up by all that pre-Christmas alcohol or the slightly warmer weather had defrosted everyone, or maybe the knee-deep mud was an extra challenge – whatever the reason, we had over 100 Heathsiders taking part, and we had many terrific performances on a very tough course. As Chris has written a full and frank super-enthusiastic  race report I won't steal his thunder or bore you with duplicating any of  it- read the full uncensored version below!

92 Heathsiders in weekend races

Five of our runners deserve special praise for their performances at the first weekend of December. Sue Rust had no trouble winning the women’s race at the Sorority Cup at Trent Park on Saturday and, among the men, Dan McKeown had an impressive ninth place in the Fraternity Cup. On the same day at the same park, Rachel Seckl came second (U17) and Lucy Carter third (U15) in the North West London Young Athletes League. Meanwhile Leigh James was the women’s winner at the Perivale 5 miler on Sunday, winning by half a minute and Dan Madams was the fourth man, despite having to stop to pick up the keys he’d dropped along the way.

Lead role for Elspeth as women star in Grovelands Sunday League fixture

The course was rather tougher than I had anticipated! It was very waterlogged at the bottom end where the lake was overflowing, and even at the top end it was a bit muddy as well. There was an odd zig-zag section across an open section, and one part when you emerged from some cover onto open grassland and were blown backwards by the wind. I had the odd complaint that the course was not as flat as I had suggested, and everyone's shoes were filthy by the end!!! At least it was a sunny morning, if a little chilly and windy.
