Lead role for Elspeth as women star in Grovelands Sunday League fixture

Sunday League, Grovelands Park , 25 November

Robin Tremaine reports

The course was rather tougher than I had anticipated!  It was very waterlogged at the bottom end where the lake was overflowing, and even at the top end it was a bit muddy as well.  There was an odd zig-zag section across an open section, and one part when you emerged from some cover onto open grassland and were blown backwards by the wind.  I had the odd complaint that the course was not as flat as I had suggested, and everyone's shoes were filthy by the end!!!  At least it was a sunny morning, if a little chilly and windy.

Nothing like a local course to encourage a good turnout, and we had 18 Heathsiders running.  The women were the stars of the show.  Elspeth made a stunning debut in the Sunday League, coming 4th woman (and beating all the Heathside men).  Our women were the third team, only just behind St Albans Striders.  If only we had this turnout regularly, we could get some very good results (for the women at least) – I am looking forward to a similar turnout for the next race at St Albans!
