European U18 Discus Championships          Rieti    16- 19 July

Simon Baker reports ;

“ Young Heathsider Elkie Baker joined the 43 strong GB&NI Team competing at the 5th European U18 Championships in Reiti, Italy.  Despite dealing with challenging conditions (90 minute coach transfers from the hotel and constant 38 degree heat) the team produced a series of exceptional performances topping the medal table with 14 medals 8 of which were Gold.

The throwing team of 9 contributed 2 Golds and a silver including a national u18 record and Championship best.

With 43 entries the Womans Discus was the largest event with the qualification pools on the first afternoon under blistering sun and no wind.  Such was the quality of the field which included the world No1 automatic Qualification for the final was set at 48.50m.  Elkie warmed up with two throws landing close to 45m and her first competitive mark was 43.03m, her 2nd furthest competition throw,   Her 2nd throw was her best but just clipped the net and she was unable to improve with her final throw finishing 9th in her pool and 19th overall.

However given due to injury she has been unable to train most of the season and has had to change her technique it has been a remarkable achievement to earn her GB vest. The conpetition was ultimately won by Marina Hadjikosta (Cyp) with a throw of 56.17m.  “

Highlander Backyard Ultra                Perth               21 Jul

Alex Sweet took on this challenge, and managed to qualify for the UK in the upcoming world champs by winning this event, as he reports ;

      “ On Friday evening I took the train up to Perth to race in Scotland’s premier backyard ultra, with my son Greg as company and crew. A Silver Ticket was on offer for the winner, guaranteeing a spot on the UK team for the world team championship race in October.

After four recent races at Red On, GOBYU, Suffolk and Florence Court went huge, I felt sure that The Highlander would also do big numbers. I came ready to match Iain’s 64 yards. I thought there were a half-dozen runners with a similar ambition, and at least some of us would get there.

From 165 starters, 35 runners made it to the 100 mile mark at midday on Sunday, a strong showing.

So it was a surprise when, ten hours later, there were just three of us left from yard 34 onwards, as we headed into the second night. We ran some yards together, working as a trio in the dark.

Kieron made a tactical decision after 37 yards to keep his legs intact, with his place on the UK team likely secure.

At this stage Mike and I joked that we’d each find it convenient if the other wanted to stop! But that not being the case, I mentally prepared for us both to make it to the 60 hour mark.

However, it wasn’t to be. Mike stopped after a 43 yard new PB, at 7am on the Monday morning.

That left me with the brand new experience of running a final victory yard – both exhilarating and nerve-wracking.

I feel in surprisingly good shape after the race. I now have three months to recover and go again at the Team Champs in October. Bring it on! “

Greenwich Peninsula Five Miler        Greenwich      19 Jul

Gavin Evans reports on this race where he picked up another club record ;

“ I was the only Heathsider to run in this very pleasant five-miler. There were no chips and no loos (except for Costa Coffee) but the low-key event was well organised – friendly, well-marshalled with good signage – and the flat two-lap course took in parkland, river paths and urban scenes. It was windy along the Thames but, overall, the weather was kind. My legs were a bit tired after Friday night's 5000m at Finsbury Park so I ended up with a PW for the distance in 34:55. “
