SAL #1, Hackney Half, & Halle Throwing Festival

Southern Athletics League Division 1            Finsbury Park             16 May

Simon Baker reports on the first SAL fixture of the season, plus on Elkie Baker’s participation in an international Throwing event in Germany ;

“ The Club kicked off our 2nd season in the SAL Division 1 with a fantastic 2nd place behind the current Champions TVH. There were event wins for Andy Barnes (5000m), Montana Dennis (U20M) 110mH and Bill Steel DT and SP.  Bill set two new club records in the Discus and Shot Putt.  While there were no wins for the women there were 2nd places for Lily Woolcock 1500m, Asia Emanuel (U20W) 200m and Lila Blustin (U18W) 2000mSC.

Thanks so much to everyone who volunteered to help on the day as well as the fantastic efforts of the athletes, officials and coaches, especially team captains Lily and Richard as well as meeting manager Peter. “

After one match, Heathside sit in 6th place out of 18 in the League with 5 points ; The next match is at Mile End on Sunday 21st June.

Hallesche Werfertage             Halle, Germany           16 May

“ Elkie Baker travelled with the England Team to Halle in Germany to take part in the 51st Hallesche Werfetage throwing festival which featured athletes from across the world and numerous olympians.

Competing on the Sunday, despite an injury, she recorded her 2nd best throw of 41.67m to top her qualifying group and qualify for the final where she recorded a new Pb of 42.81m with her first throw finishing in 8th place against many athletes who will be competing in the Euro U18 Championships this summer.  Her PB is now 1.49m below UK qualifying standard.  She is now ranked 28th European U18 and 20th UK woman.”

Eryri 25k ( Ultra Trail )            Snowdonia                 17 May           

Jean- Baptiste ran the 25k Eryri race in Snowdonia, ( pronouced  Eh-ruh -ree ) the ‘ land of the eagles ‘, and finished in 16th place out of more than 700 participants, a race which based on its website has a route that “explores scenic mountain trails and rugged terrain, offering a taste of the landscapes that define this iconic national park “
