Men's SAL team report

I am pleased to report on our very successful first SAL match in the top division! We have shown that not only do we belong in the top division, we belong right at the top end of the league. The weather was great, the atmosphere superb, loads of Heathsiders stepped up to volunteer to make sure everything ran smoothly, and we had a fantastic renovated track to compete on, which looked superb!

We packed out every event, with multiple non-scorers/reserves we could call on with some last minute drop outs. Massive shout outs to Wayne Morley and Jordan Marshall who made their steeplechase debuts for the club and put in some very impressive times with a 3rd and 2nd place in the A and B string races, respectively (especially since Jordan had already ran a 1500!). Big thanks to the multi-eventers Thomas Wasserman (110mH, Hammer, High jump, Pole Vault) Malakai David McKenzie Callum (400mH and Pole Vault), and Ivan Ross (Javelin and Pole Vault) for filling a wide range of challenging events and for excellent performances.

It was great to see Heathside's sprinting dominance continue into the top division, with Carlos Mingoes winning the 100m A string (11.08) and Avery Dietrich getting 2nd place in the B string (11.42, having just come from doing the high jump) and our 4x100 relay team coming 2nd as well! Another area of strength was in the hurdles. Trey Corlis came 3rd in a very strong 400mH race to start the day (where the first 4 athletes came in at 57 seconds or under!!) Malakai David McKenzie Callum also ran very well to win the B string 400mH in 62.18. In the sprint hurdles (110m), Trey and Thomas both came a very impressive 2nd in the A and B strings respectively, with 15.27 and 18.13.

Some very strong performances were also seen by Sam Brown (400m, 50.02), George Warren (800m, 1:55.69), Chris Gracie (1500m, 4:12.56), and Neo Fujiwara (Triple Jump, 12.47) all of whom came 2nd in their respective A races - as well as Will de Cothi with a very respectable 5000m in 15:50 for 3rd.

It was also great to see a raft of new faces with Heathside debutees including: Steven Booth and Robin Hardy, who returned after many years out of competition to get us valuable points in the discus, as well Charalambos Pittordis who scored well in the Hammer and Shotput.

Women's SAL report Finsbury Park 17.5.25

What an incredible day for the women of Heathside at the opening Division 1 match of the 2025 Southern Athletics League! The energy was electric, the performances outstanding, and the team spirit unmatched.

Israel and Kurt assembled a dynamic sprint and jumps squad, with both strings in the 100m and 200m placing 4th and 5th. Speedsters Asia Emanuel, Cara Brown, Nicole Stewart, and Samiyah Wilson showed fierce determination and impressive form on the track.

In the middle distance events, our younger athletes stepped up with fearless performances—many making their SAL debut. Isabella Watkins stormed to victory in the 800m with a season's best of 2:18 and followed up with a strong 4th place in the 400m. Abigail Bereket bravely filled in at the last minute to run her first ever 400m, finishing a commendable 5th. Rosa Cormacain placed 3rd in her first SAL 800m, then backed it up with an impressive 2nd in the B string 2000m steeplechase. Millie Watkins joined her in the steeplechase, taking 1st in her string with a time of 7:42—before going on to run the Hackney Half the very next day alongside her sister Isabella!

In the 1500m, Kiara Corkin and Lila Blustin held their own against a senior field, finishing 4th and 2nd in their strings respectively. The fact that they were the only juniors in the race speaks volumes about their grit and composure.

The 3000m was dominated by Heathside's senior women. Eva Divetain delivered a sensational run to take the win in a personal best and sub-10-minute time. She was supported by Rebecca Piggott—competing despite still recovering from the London Marathon—and Lily Woolcock, who took victories in both the A and B string races. Truly inspiring!

In the hurdles, Kyra Smith ruled the day, taking on both the 100mH and 400mH. She secured 3rd place in the 100mH and was joined by Hester Hill, who placed 2nd in the B string. In the 400mH, Kyra and Lily Woolcock both came 3rd in their strings, showing real consistency across events.

Speaking of Hester Hill—what a debut! Making her mark as Heathside's newest multi-event star, she racked up serious points across disciplines. She soared to 2nd place in the pole vault, alongside seasoned athlete Molly Harrison, who also came 2nd in the B string. A huge shoutout to Ivan for coaching both athletes on the morning of the competition—it clearly paid off!

Hester was joined by Margot Koppe (also on her SAL debut!) in the high jump. Both cleared 1.50m, with Hester winning the B string and Margot finishing 2nd in the A string—a stunning result for first-timers!

In the horizontal jumps, Sian Adeyemi made a fantastic club debut, coming 4th in the B string long jump and 3rd in the A string triple jump. Abigail added to her day with 3rd in the B string triple jump, while Nicole Stewart placed 5th in the A string long jump—holding her own brilliantly as a junior competing against senior athletes.

Over in the javelin, Molly teamed up with Isa Cooper to place 5th and 4th in the A and B strings respectively. Molly threw over 19m and Isa over 17m—an amazing effort from two runners turned throwers from Jacob and Kabir's groups!

Isa went on to make her debut in the shot put, finishing 5th and improving her distance by more than a metre during the event. She was coached on the day by the legendary Noelle O'Regan, who came 3rd in the A string shot put and won the B string discus—possibly breaking a club record in the process! Elkie Baker rounded out the throws with a standout discus performance, finishing over 7m ahead of the next competitor.

Despite last-minute changes and a few dropouts, our relay squads delivered gutsy, cohesive runs. The 4x100m team (Asia, Nicole, Samiyah, and Claris Lawrence) powered to 3rd place, while the 4x400m team (Kyra, Rebecca Quirke, Lila, and Abigail) battled to 5th with true team spirit.

THANK YOU.

As your team managers, we couldn't be prouder. From the first event to the last, the effort, resilience, and camaraderie on display were phenomenal. A massive thank you to every athlete, coach, official, volunteer, and supporter who made the day unforgettable. It's moments like these that remind us how special it is to be part of Heathside—a club that shows up, works hard, and lifts each other up.

Thank you for making this day such a success. We truly couldn't have done it without you.

Saigon Half Marathon, Saigon 17.5.25

Alfie Wrigley reports “Just writing to let you guys know of my most recent race, conveniently known as the Saigon Half but officially known as the Ho Chi Minh City Night Run Eximbank Half Marathon (although doesn't roll off the tongue as nicely) Thought it might make an interesting inclusion in  the weekly online race report and the Tuesday briefing after the warmup at track.

The race was held at midnight due to the heat and humidity on 17 May 2025 (although it was still 36 degrees and 85% humidity) and my chip time was: 1:39:05, tough race!”

Parkrun

Ninety nine Heathsiders took part in parkrun last Saturday.  Congratulations to the only first place finisher Amanda Maserati (Beckenham Place 20:34)
