Jamaal & Bunting lead 57 Heathsiders in London Marathon

This week the London Marathon naturally takes top spot with a string of outstanding results among the 57 Heathsiders who reached the finish line, with Seyfu Jamaal  coming third and breaking the club record in a time of 2:15:30 and Rebecca Bunting coming fourth among the V40s in a time of 2:41:43.

Other events at the weekend included the BFTTA Open at Lee Valley where U20 100m sprinter Montana Dennis broke his PB in a time of 11:44, the Padua Half which Greg Bell ran, and an old one we missed before, the Thames Towpath 10 miler won by Andy Barnes.

London Marathon, Sunday April 26

At least 57 Heathsiders competed in what has been the greatest marathon of all-time (a men’s world record, two men breaking the two-hour barrier and a women’s world record).

On a sunny, warm but not too hot morning our Seyfu Jamaal came third in the open field and broke the club record in a time of 2:15:30 and Rebecca Bunting, coming back from back surgery, was the 4th V40 woman in a time of 2:41:43, just 29 second off her PB. Jamaal ran an evenly paced race, going through the half in 1:07:21 while Bunting went through the half in 1:20:01.

Five of our runners finished in under 2:40, 11 under 2:45, 14 under 2:50 and 21 under 3:00 (including four of our women). And many got PBs (not all indicated here).

And former Heathsider Brogan Wallace (now running for Shettleston Harriers in Glasgow) was the 6th woman in an outstanding time of 2:35:01.

Our second man was Sam Macaulay who ran a PB time of 2:24:40. He went through the halfway mark at 1:13:24, meaning he completed the second half in 1:11:16 – a big negative split.

Third was Tom Livermore in a PB time of 2:29:40. He went through the half in 1;14:27 – close to even splits.

He was followed by V40 Sion Lewis in a PB time of 2:30:29, and James Hurrell in 2:32:43, three minutes off his PB.

Our second woman was Francesca Stocco who beat her PB time by more than four minutes, finishing in 2:55:47, having gone through the half in 1:17:15.

Third was Lucy Browne in a time of 2:56:53, an 8:35 PB. She went through the half in 1:27:36. She was followed by Anna Rawsthorne in a time 2:59:54.

Heathside’s fifth woman was V55 Sarah Swinhoe, running soon after the personal tragedy of the death of her partner, club stalwart Richard Peachment. Despite disrupted training, she finished in 3:04:55, fourth in her age group.

The other Heathsiders who got under 2:45 were Andrew Baldock, 2:41:13, Thomas Foy, 2:41:5, Greg Whiteley, 2:42:39, Arturo Garcia-Huidobro Prieto, 2:43:17 and Etienne Daries, 2:43:42.

Several other Heathsiders excelled for different reasons:

·       The sixth Heathside woman, V50 Rebecca Taylor, broke her PB by more than six minutes, finishing in 3:10:03.

·       Another V50, Sara Black was next in 3:12:56 – an impressive time, especially considering that she had run the Boston Marathon six days earlier.

·       V50 Aaron Smith was running his debut marathon. He had 3:30 in mind, then said he would aim to get close to 3:20 and went through the half in 1:39:01 but he sped up and finished in 3:14:17 – a big negative split.

·       V50 Hugo Cox did his debut marathon in almost even splits, going through the half in 1:30:35 and finishing in 3:01:49.

Padua Half, Padua, Italy, Sunday April 26

Greg Bell sent this report:

"This was a fast, flat course starting in the spa town of Abano Terme and finishing in the historic centre of Padua, Italy (not far from Venice). It was a sunny, hot day, hitting 28°C+ by midday. I got cramps, so had to walk for a few kms. My race time was well over the hoped for 1h50m-ish at 2h28m. Oh well, tutti frutti as they say here..."
