We have just heard today (Saturday) that our Liam Garrett won the England Athletics U20 5000 meter championship (at the age of just 17) in Bedford, while Seyfu Jamaal was eighth. Jem O’Flaherty, coming back from injury, was close behind. More to follow in next week's report.

Thankfully we always have good supporting with a decent Heathside crew huddled in lane 3 with beer and prosecco yelling at us as we lapped the dreaded rat wheel for 25 laps.

Read MoreThere were three big events this week for the club – Crouch End 10K (plus 250m) and Fun Runs, the SAL and the Hackney Half. The Crouch End event had the largest number of Heathsiders in attendance, with many of them winning various trophies including first male and female. The SAL despite having a smallish turnout did well and results at the Hackney Half were impressive.

Saturday saw the Seniors, U20 and U17s compete in testing conditions at the Lee Valley track with morning rain showers turning into sunshine but hampered by a strong wind.
Read MoreThe highlight of a busy post-London Marathon week was Jem O’Flaherty’s magnificent sixth place over 10k in the European U20 Road Race Championships in Northern Italy in a time of 31:54 – leading the team to bronze medal position. There was an excellent 3000m PB (8:30) for Jem’s Heathside teammate Liam Garrett and yet another fast marathon for Jim Connell in Milton Keynes (3:02:56) – just two weeks after running the Boston Marathon.

With an early start at 8am, it's quite an operation with over 100 people in my team and around 500 volunteers in the finish area doing all manner of good deeds.
