Half marathon heaven and club records smashed

We were awash with half marathons this weekend, producing some outstanding times and reflecting the exhaustive and obviously effective marathon training in progress. Fastest Heathside man over the half marathon distance was Tom Aldred finishing in an impressive 1.08 at Reading in 18th place, and fastest Heathside lady was Kelly Thorneycroft, also at Reading, where she finished in 1.22.

Ruairi McGonagle: Heathside's teen wonder

Ruairi McGonagle this year established himself as the brightest star in the Heathside firmament. Over the past month the 13-year-old has added to his Met League and Middlesex triumphs by winning the Northwest Young Athletes cross country league, picking up 14th place in the National Cross Country championships and coming first for his county, and 24th overall, in the national Inter-Counties Cross Country Champs. He speaks to Gavin Evans about running for Heathside.

National XC Champs 2017

After a week of fairly vile weather, conditions weren't too bad for the National XC Championships in Wollaton Park. The course had lost its beloved log hazard, but there was plenty more for the grizzled XC lover to appreciate, combining mud, water hazards, some fast stretches, and a remarkable profusion of tussocks.

Chilly, hilly at Ally Pally! Heathside stun at Royston

In the Met League (results still "provisional" at time of writing), the Junior Men (U17/U15) were 1st placed on the day (7th for the season), Ruairi McGonagle won the U13 Boys event; the Senior Women A's finished 2nd on the day and 2nd overall in Division 1, whilst the B's look like having to face the drop back to Div.2. However, the Women C's finished as the League's highest placed C team at 4th in Div.2.

Stocks wins Gloucester 50K

The two main racing events this weekend for the club were the Gloucester 50k where Mike Stocks cruised home to first place in an incredible time of 3.23.26, and the ever popular Watford Half, where 31 Heathsiders competed, led home by Tom Livermore who came 16th in an excellent time of 1.16.
