Hundred-plus Heathsiders get stuck in at Horsenden Hill

The fourth Met League fixture of the season had everything that makes mid-winter cross-country so compelling - mud, hills, puddles (with a bit of ice), cold, mud, and more mud. Add to that some outstanding individual and team performances and you have the makings of another memorable afternoon for the Heathside faithful, of whom more than 100 did battle with the other clubs at Horsenden Hill and lived to tell the tale. Despite much flouting of Hartley’s Rules* among the ranks, results proved to be more than satisfactory.

Heathside’s women’s cross-country team added to their gold medal collection on Saturday – with the Middlesex winner’s trophy taking its place alongside their North London and London gongs.

Kirk-Smith and Heathside men set the bar high for 2016 in Hyde Park

Many Heathsiders had a busy start to the New Year. Over 40 Heathsides raced on New Year’s Day alone either in Hyde Park or in parkruns. Adam Kirk-Smith and Heathside men were particularly successful in Hyde Park, as were Andy Barnes and Ulla Cartwright-Finch in the Olympic Park 10K. A few Heathsiders also stayed indoors on New Year’s Day to set PBs in Lea Valley.

Buntingford 10, Tempo Winter 10k and a double helping of Parkruns

Not surprisingly there is very little report during this festive weekend, but Rebecca Bunting excelled in the aptly named Buntingford 10 and Dan, Joe and Louisa all improved on their times from last year in the Tempo 10K in Warwickshire. Parkrunning was definitely the popular option, with races on both Boxing Day and Christmas Day and many Heathsiders doing the double.

Sunday league and Perivale

This week Gavin has introduced a new triple star rating for those hardy souls who braved Met League at the Scrubs, Earl Haig afterwards and Sunday League on the, er, Sunday. Well done Kim and Dan. Well done also those who doubled up with Perivale.

Gruel before the feast for Heathside, in a tough stretch at Wormwood Scrubs

Among the many things that make the Met League such a compelling competition is its unpredictability. A magnificent 97 Heathsiders turned up at Wormwood Scrubs on Saturday expecting mud and puddles after a stormy week, only to find the course as dry, grassy, and forgiving as it’s ever been.

Heathside's alphas in fraternity success

Heathside’s near domination of the North London cross country scene continued apace this week, though this time out at the Fraternity Cup it was a couple of individual results that stood out most as James Wooldridge and Adam Kirk-Smith captured a fantastic 1-2 in the men’s race. The women weren’t far behind though, led home by Rebecca Bunting making a welcome return to Heathside colours. More on the Trent Park races from Captain Chris shortly.

Heathsiders take gold in Hackney Marshes & Trent Park

Heathsiders triumphed in the Hackney Marshes mud and rain at the North London Cross-Country Championships on Saturday, taking home both team winners’ trophies. Our four A-team women (Rachel Newstead, Cas Wright, Leah Michaels and Bethany Scott) were in the top 15 as were our six A-team men (Adam Kirk Smith, Andrew Brooker, James Woodridge, Andy Barnes, Martin Potter and Chris Norris) plus Tom Livermore. Our vets also took double gold, led by Martin among the men and Ourida Sid among the women.
