Race round-up part 2: Valencia and California marathons and the Lea Valley indoor meeting

In part two of this week’s race round-up, we have the belated results from the Chingford League last week, great performances from marathons in Valencia and California and an indoor meeting in Lea Valley

NWLL/Chingford League Cross Country,  Trent Park 27.11.21 I

The arctic winds were a pretty brutal introduction to Cross Country for the bumper numbers of Heathside debutants at the NWLL meeting at Trent Park.  With the course shifted from the normal course to an exposed sloping field which combined with the stiff wind provided a real challenge.  Our Girls lead the way again with wins in the U13 and U15 Girls races and 2nd place for the U17 Mens team.  Although there were  no individual race wins Izzy Watkins (U15G) was 2nd and Kompany Szentes 3rd plus another 12 top 10 finishes.

ESAA XC Cup, National Final, Newquay, 4.12.21

Simon sent in the following report from Newquay:

Izzy and Milly Watkins missed the Met League as they were running for their school in the National Final of the English Schools Cross Country Cup.  Having qualified through 2 rounds the girls found themselves up against some of the best runners in the country many of whom will be contesting the National Schools Championships.  Both girls are having fine seasons under coach Kabir's watchful eye and despite challenging conditions on the exposed course Izzy was her school's 1st runner home in 14th place with sister Millly only 5s behind.  Then they had to endure a long wait before the results were declared and they were given the news that they had won team silver to go with their Team Silver in the London Youth Games.

Valencia Marathon, 5th December 2021

Valentin Valeanu and several Heathsiders had a great day at the Valencia marathon last weekend, from where he sent the following report:  “It was a great event and race, 12 degrees at the start of the race and about 19 degrees at the  finish line, very sunny during the whole race but bit windy ....overall...all Heathsides were brilliant with impressive personal achievements!”

California International Marathon

Meanwhile, Julia Kelk braved a long haul flight in pursuit of her marathon goals. She reports:
“I ventured abroad after more than 2 years to run CIM (California International Marathon) in Sacramento on Sunday.

It's a very long way to go for a race, with an 8h time difference.

I had to reconsider my goals after being relentlessly ill (not Covid!) for the 9 weeks leading up to the race. But with flights and hotel all booked, I had to go do it!  I ran 3:13:28 which was 49th F40-44, 354th woman, 1735th overall. Although I had been hoping for better, it was still a 5 minute PB and should get me a London Marathon Championship place.

The course is gentle rolling hills for 20 miles and then mostly flat for the last 6.2. It's a dream course with few turns, no hills too long or steep, and perfect running weather. Too bad it's so far away!”

Parkrun

A few Heathsiders resisted the temptation to run in the Met league cross-country and ran in parkruns instead.  Congratulations for first place finishes go to Peter Gould (17:48, Ally Pally) and Nick Hodges-Gibson (18:47, Sizewell).  Full results can be found here.
