Returning to it’s traditional course Barnet again hosted well run Cross Country competition which remains a popular highlight of the fixture calendar

Pete Crockford reports “A good turnout of Heathsiders for some proper cross country on a heavy but surprisingly unmuddy course, on a dry day with a bit of a chill breeze. Senior performance of the day was from Joseph Young, leading the men’s team home, well clear in 2nd place. Leading the women home was Olivia Lukasewich in 14th. The men’s A team were 8th, and the B’s 16th, whilst the women’s A team were 10th, and the B’s 20th.

In Saturdays race at Trent Park, within the Fraternity and Sorority Cups, Heathside women’s and men’s teams both won their Division 2 fixture!”

Lee Valley Velo Park 10 mile, November 26

Gavin Evans sent in the following reportI entered this truly awful event, which was part of a morning of running that included a half marathon, 10k, 5k and one mile race. What was billed as an undulating race was, in fact, perpetually hilly. The 10-miler consisted of 10 supposedly one-mile laps, each with four big bridges and other up-and-down bits, so that meant 40 bridges in all and hardly any flat running. And the total distance on my Garmin and that of other runners I spoke to afterwards was 10.14 miles. But the worst bit was that the runs overlapped, probably to save time and money for the organisers. At the star, slower half marathon runners got in the way and then, suddenly, our path was blocked by the 82 10k runners who were let loose in the middle of our race. And so it went until the end when we were welcomed home by an exasperatingly perky announcer who couldn’t stop gushing how wonderful everything was. I ended up coming third (getting pipped on the line by a young man) but in a truly awful time of 67:55. Oh well.”

Photofinish Officials Course, Finsbury Park, 26.11.22

In what may very well be a completely new departure London Heathside played host to an England Athletics Introductory Photo Finish course this weekend, in the meeting room at Finsbury Park.

Helena, who attended the course commented

"The course is a great intro and not scary like jumping straight in on an event (like I did). I think it would be extremely helpful for a few more club members to participate. I think anyone who does the course would feel more confident to volunteer, however, would still need experienced supervision [..]. Also for our current officials to have a better awareness of photo-finish processes, might help communications between officials and organisers and therefore smoother event running."

Heathside is currently seeking funding to improve the club's photo finish equipment as part of the overall event offering at Finsbury Park.

If you'd like to be part of the Heathside officiating team contact me, Adrian Essex at aessex@bmaf.org,uk or via WhatsApp on 07970705411. or the Club Officials Secretary Jonathan Litchfield. The club will pay course fees for any members interested in giving something back to the sport.
