England Athletics U17 / U15 Athletics Championships, Birmingham   8 -10 Aug

Simon Baker reports ;

“ The weekend saw the last of the individual national championships with the younger U15 and U17 athletes competing at the Alexander Stadium which this time next year will host the European Athletics Championships.  With the age group changes next year this is the last time they will feature these age groups.  The Championships also incorporated combined events competitions and a range of Para Athletics events making the three days an outstanding advert for the sport in the UK.

Even to make the championships is an achievement as you need to have the qualifying standard.  6 Young Heathsider's took part with 2 making finals one the semi finals and one National Champion!

The Club had two U15's taking part, Myla Miller ran 13.02s in the 100m while Gabriel made the 80mH final and was in contention for bronze until he hit the last hurdle and finished 6th.  Technical events live by these small margins.

In the U17's Kyra continued her improvement in the 300mH one of the hardest events running a PB.  Mikel Alexander finished 2nd in his heat with the 9th fastest time but was run out of the semi-final finishing in 4th.  Malakai one his 100mH heat and started well in the final but clipped the last 3 hurdles to finish 4th .

In the U17W Discus Elkie took the lead in the 2nd round and threw her furthest 41.41m in the 4th round to add the National title to the English Schools she won last month.  Elkie joined the club as an 8 year old primarily for XC and 800m but took up throwing so she could get into the team for MYAL matches.   8 years later she is a National Champion.

Well done to all the athletes on what has been another fantastic year for the club's young athletes “.
