Abingdon Marathon Oxfordshire 19 Oct

4 Heathsiders ( pic ) participated in the Abingdon marathon, led home by Laurens and Mathew with 2hr 47 & 2hr 50 times respectively ; Phil equalled his PB to the second ! , as he reports :

"Abingdon marathon does what it says in the tin. Race was excellent yet again, fantastic organisation, the forecast rain held off until after the start, and everything else went smoothly on a cool overcast day. A race consisting of mostly club runners made for some fun banter in pace groups early on. I chatted to another runner who was a Guinness world record marathon holder who ran London marathon as a shrimp, but was awarded the record with the Guinness category of ‘crustaceans’. … This chat used up around 4 miles. It was an education … I wish i’d sprinted 5 steps earlier “

Yorkshire Marathon               York                 19 Oct

Gavin participated in the Yorkshire Marathon, proving even for a seasoned veteran it may never be too late to encounter new hazards that can adversely affect your performance, as he reports

“ The Yorkshire Marathon was this year run under perfect conditions – a very light breeze and 15-degrees most of the way. The gently undulating course is scenically lovely and the event is very well organised.

I had trained diligently for it and was aiming to go under 3:10. However, I experienced a rather severe stomach within half an hour of the start, forcing me to take long pit stops along the way. After the second one, I kinda lost the will to live and morosely jogged to the end, with a time of 3:38:30 (my worst in 27 years) after which I had a little inner dialogue that went like this: “Never again drink three little bottles of concentrated beetroot juice plus one Red Bull plus three Pro Plus pills 15 minutes before a race.”

Centurion Autumn 100              Goring, Oxfordshire                18 Oct

Filipe completed this epic and gruelling race at the weekend, and reports :

“  This Saturday morning I attempted a 100 miles trail event for the 2nd time at the Autumn 100 in Goring, Oxfordshire.

The race consists of 4 out and back 25 miles legs in different directions, with 1,500m of elevation. You run on the Thames Pathway and on the Ridgeway.

The weather conditions were perfect and the trails were completely dry.

Hugh Tibbs finished 1st in just over 13 hours. He set a new course record and ran the fastest trail 100 miler in the UK.

Sophie Seward won the ladies race in 18:25.

As for my own race, it started well but I was getting slower as I progressed through legs 2 and 3. Luckily, Alex Sweet paced me during the last 25 miles and ensured that I finished in under 24 hours and set a new PB.  “
