Super Mario run in New York

With bitterly cold conditions and less than a week to go until the next Met league cross-country race, only a few hardened Heathsiders were out racing this week.  The highlights include stunning runs in New York from Mario Cadete and Jason Bredhauer, great runs in the Marlow, Stevenage and Lancaster half marathons and various races in Kent, involving some of Heathside’s best-known married couples.

New York marathon

At least three Heathsiders, Mario Cadete, Jason Bredhauer and James Connell travelled to New York for the marathon last Sunday.  All ran well.

Mario’s run was particularly impressive as he outwitted seasoned race-time predictors from the Sunday 9am group, finishing two minutes ahead of their anticipated time, in 2:50:52.  This was a 3 minute improvement on his time in the London marathon this year and appears to be a PB.  We look forward to Mario’s run in London marathon next year, which, according to the same predictors, he should finish within 2:45.  If he outwits the predictors again, prospects for Heathside’s reality version of the new game, the Super Mario Run, look good.

Meanwhile, Jason Bredhauer’s run was just as memorable as Mario’s, as he set a PB in 3:21:32.  He was justifiably delighted, commenting: “Fantastic race! Sun was out, the fans’ audio levels and enthusiasm were elevated, all the makings of a great race.” James finished soon after in 3:22:54.

Marlow, Stevenage and Lancaster half marathons

Within weeks of completing the Abingdon marathon, Philip Hogg was out racing again, this time completing the Marlow half marathon on Sunday in 1:29:45.  Meanwhile, two Heathsiders, Roger Wagstaff and Jakob Kozel ran in the Stevenage half marathon, a fixture in the Club championships for many years in the past.  Roger ran well, coming 5th in his age category, whilst Jakob finished shortly after that in 1:38:52.

Finally, new member Tara Shresttha-Carney travelled to Lancaster, from where she reports: “Great day representing the club at Lancaster Half Marathon today! Training with this great club for the last 2 months enabled me to achieve a PB of 1:39:41! Thank you Heathside!”  You’re welcome Tara and we look forward to hearing about future races!

10Ks and 5 miles

The Howes were the first of the married couples out racing this week, spending an evening in Gravesend last Thursday.  For Jacob, it was a chance to escape the grind of the Thursday evening session for a new challenge with a familiar twist.  He reports:  As an alternative to hill reps I took a trip to Gravesend to check out the regular Thursday evening 5k/10k races.  On the high speed line out of St Pancras it's easy to get to, but it turns out to be the curate's 10k: floodlit in parts.  The central section of each of the 4 laps was well lit, but the far ends were on the dark side of gloomy.  Luckily years of training at Finsbury Park had provided plenty of experience of this, and having run the course at the road relays I put some trust in the surface.  Adequate run in the circumstances.”  Angela, on the other hand, ran well to finish second lady in 44:01.

Kent was also the venue of the Wastell-Potter outing, where the couple represented their second-claim club, Deal tri in the Deal castle 5 miler on Sunday.  Despite blustery conditions, the two did well, with Martin coming 5th home and 1st V40 in 28.28. Jackie showed that she remains a serious contender in the Fantasy League this season, finishing in 36.45 and coming 10th lady home and 2nd in her age category. Jackie was also in the winning team for Deal Tri.

Finally, Elspeth Storrar ran in the Regents Park 10K, finishing in 46:36 and Tom Griffiths ran in the Leeds Abbey Dash, finishing in 40:35.

Parkruns

Numerous Heathsiders braved the cold in parkruns last Saturday.  Congratulations for first place finishes are due to Tom Aldred (15:58 in Finsbury Park), Kelly Thorneycroft (18:23 and PB in Hackney Marshes), Matthew Cockerill (18:51 in Pymmes Park), Rebecca Bunting (18:29 in Portobello, Edinburgh).
