Rob Jackson titles and team silver at Perivale 5

Cathy Jeremiah left no doubts as to her claim to be crowned Heathside road racing queen this year, coming third in the Perivale 5 with a PB run on Sunday to secure the Rob Jackson title and help our women to second place. Julian led our men home to second place in the Perivale 5 and is the clear Rob Jackson winner on the men's side. Also this weekend: a mighty swift 10k PB for Tom Aldred.

The Ealing, Southall & Middlesex-hosted Perivale 5 brought the curtain down on Heathside’s 2013 Rob Jackson Championship on Sunday, and a good contingent of Heathsiders turned out to mark the occasion and tackle the fast, flat course (never raced it myself so I could be making that up). Julian Ferraro was our first runner in, finishing 13th, and was backed up by Gavin Evans and Trevor Wilson to lead our men (all vets) to second place and secure Julian the Rob Jackson title. Leigh James donned a Heathside vest and ran a small PB to finish second woman, with the unstoppable Cathy Jeremiah finishing third and Tammela Platt making up the scoring team for a second place team finish. Cathy has had a wonderful running year, notching up one PB after another – two just this weekend, as she also ran a PB at the Serpentine Last Friday of the Month 5k. How did she do it? What changes did she make to her training? To her beer consumption? To her focus? Interviews will be granted at the club Christmas Party on Saturday, 14 December, after the awards presentation, so book your place now. Congratulations to Julian and Cathy. Runners up were Gavin Evans and Rob Bowler in the men’s competition, and Sarah Swinhoe and Caroline White in the women’s competition. For more, including the full results, see here.

Elsewhere this weekend Tom Aldred and Rebecca Bunting were rewarded for venturing south of the river for the Self Transcendence 10k in Battersea Park – both ran PBs. Tom’s is particularly cool given that he’s still not in full training, as far as I understand. And it’s cool because it’s just really fast (31:01).

Laura Boothman and Rob Watts took part in the Thanet Coastal on Sunday, where Laura found her pre-marathon pace and nailed a 1:29:49 and Rob, back from a lay-off, made it home in a slower, but worthy, 1:49:41. That and more from Laura’s report:

“The Thanet 10's seaside location is the source of its fearsome reputation -- if 10 miles of coastal concrete and a gusty breeze don't clear your hangover and give your legs something important to ache about, then the uphill finish will. Contenders start the run – also known as the Alan Green Memorial 10 Mile Race -- with the sea to the port side and follow the winding promenade from Westgate, via Margate to Clifton Ville, and back the same way. The joy of the mid-point turn is dampened slightly by the reasliation that the return route is into the wind. We know of two Heathsiders in the 277 strong field: Laura Boothman, finally back to pre-marathon pace and nailing a 1:29:49 and Rob Watts, back from a lay-off and plodding home in a slow, but worthy, 1:49:41. Thanks to Cambridge Harrier and ultra-runner Lucy Hine (who showed us how it should be done, finishing in 1.23.28) and partner Julian Bray -- both Rob's colleagues -- for their support.”

Last but definitely not least I have to mention Steve Monaghan’s 2:44:49 time in the San Sebastian marathon on 24 November, which didn’t make it into last week’s report but was flagged on Facebook. It was a PB, but apparently not that taxing, if Steve’s 16:55 in the last Serpentine Friday 5k is anything to go by.
