Liddiard Trophy, North of the Thames Cross Country Champs and Cheshunt Sunday League

A great week of racing with a record turnout at the Sunday league. Heathsiders were also seen taking part within River Thames half marathon, Wimbledon Half Marathon and the Serpentine 5k.

Sarah Swan and Jake Spencer report as follows for the Liddiard and North Thames Cup 28th October ‘Heathside's ladies came joint 3rd in both the Liddard Trophy and the North of the Thames, with the same points as Ealing Southall & Middlesex however our fourth scorer was higher up the results clinching Heathside's ladies the  bronze!

The men came 3rd in Liddiard Trophy, notably beating Highgate who came in 5th. Unfortunately due to second claim technicalities the men came 4th in the North of the Thames narrowly missing a double medal haul for both the men and women, however again holding off Highgate who came in 5th. In the general team race Heathside's men took 3rd as well as a 3rd place in the Middlesex cup and in true form our Vets also came 3rd!With  a team of 6 women (the highest number we've had for some years) and 15 men Heathside should feel proud of coming home with two team bronze medals - one a piece for the men and women. Not a bad afternoon's work in a fairly low-key race.

The course is lovely undulating grassland. combined with  a little bit of wood land  and a gentle run in to the finish. Although the temperature was slightly too warm, there was a gentle breeze and the course is perfect for preparing XC runners for the savagery of the Met League. If you missed out this year make sure that you put it in the diary now.

The women's race is advertised as 5k but in reality is slightly shorter. We had two runners in the top 20: Sarah Swinhoe in 7th and Lucie Mauger in 11th, both saying afterwards that they may have shot off a bit too swiftly, probably as a result of the women running with the U20 men. Emilia Vynnycky was 18th, followed by Caroline White in 30th, Ruth Miller in 36th and Kimberley Butler in 44th. The men's race was 8k and a larger number of competitors too. We had two runners in the top 20 but the stand-out performance  of the day was Andrew Penny donning a Heathside vest for the 1st time, coming home in 2 place and a 2nd claim for Heathside. Andrew had a storming race, battling with the winner for two thirds of the race, and finishing only 20 seconds behind the Hillingdon athlete. Well done, Andrew. David Keto deserves a special mention too, finishing in 20th position, and showing in style how you graduate from the juniors to seniors. He ran a great race and clearly has a huge amount of talent. Jonathan Litchfield, finishing in 34th, had another strong race and this looks like it could be a very exciting season for him. he is sure to ruffle some feathers as the battles unfold later on in the season. Chris Hartley and James Rigby had their own battle, with Chris showing no mercy or let-up, despite having slightly 'tired legs' He finished 2 seconds ahead of the younger athlete. I have to mention Jake Spencer again; he is going from strength to strength after recently  returning from injury and I know that he will be very pleased with his 56th place, his injury has not affected his fitness.Norman Mitchell continues to be a Heathside legend and put in another worthy run.’

Tim Marshall writes for the Sunday league with a fantastic turnout: ‘Last Sunday in Cheshunt saw a record turnout of 44 Heathsiders for the first fixture of the season, split perfectly between ladies and gents. Those eagerly anticipating a mudbath would be disappointed, as though not quite the freak heat of Claybury it was still a mild autumnal day in the Hertfordshire countryside with trail shoes the footwear of choice for most runners. The extra hour of sleep must have put a spring in the step with excellent performances all round. Congratulations to our highest finishers who were Olivia Desborough (8 th woman) and Esa Valtanen (27 th man). Honourable mentions also go to Satu Hietanen, Chiara Borg and Elizabeth Drake all of whom finished within the top 20 women and Jonathan Litchfield who just snuck into the top 50 men in 49 th place.

In terms of team performances, we finished 4 th overall in the combined results, with the men’s A team in 9 th , the B team in 6 th and the Masters team in 7 th . Amazing team performance from the women who finished 1 st in both the A and B leagues and 5 th in the Masters.

Finally, huge thanks go out to Laura Boothman for her sterling organisational efforts (and for letting me chip in with some social media silliness) and to everyone who provided lifts and baked delicious treats which were enjoyed afterwards in a bobble hat cladded tarpaulin gathering.

Let’s keep the momentum and winning streaks going and get even more people to Trent Park on November 12th ! COYH                                                                                                          Parkruns

We had a host of Heathsiders parkrunning on 28/10. Of note was Hannah Jordan who was the first female at Finsbury Parkrun  For full Heathside results: http://www.parkrun.com/results/consolidatedclub/?clubNum=2017&eventdate=2017-10-28  Written by Sarah Swan, Jake Spencer, Tim Marshall and Gabi Johnson and Sarah Illingworth
