Indoor Championships Success

After last weeks XC success this weekend saw the Sunday League cancelled so the focus turns to the UK Age Group and British Masters Indoor Championships as well as road racing.

Indoor Track and Field

England Athletics U20, U17 and U15 Indoor Championships, Sheffield, 10-11.2.24

We had 3 young athletes competing at the British Age Group Indoor Championships with some great performances.  Last years bronze medalist Magdeline Paitoo won her 300m heat but despite improving her time in the semifinals was outside the top 6 that progressed to the final.

Both our hurdlers did make the final.  Gabriel Edwards who is in his first year of this age group and significantly smaller than his competitors recorded a PB in the heats making his first national final where he finished 8th but recorded another PB.  In the U17’s Montana Dennis recorded.a PB in the Heats and despite being last at the first hurdle recovered to finish 4th just 0.1s outside the medals.

Well done to all 3 and coach Israel with things looking good for the outdoor season ahead.

British Masters Indoor Championships, Lee Valley 17-18 February 2024

Adrian Day reports:-

“Heathside’s masters were in action again at Lea Valley indoor track this weekend. Nearly 600 athletes descended on the Edmonton venue from around the country and beyond: Heathsiders produced some notable performances.

In the absence of an actual official pentathlon Adrian Essex (M70) decided to construct his own melange of five events resulting in a gold in the 60m hurdles (13s), silvers  in the long jump (4.05m) and shot put (8.49m), bronze in the high jump (1.21m) and a 30.38s in the 200m. Don’t try and follow Adrian at a championship - he’s usually doing two events (or more) at the same time (luckily for event schedulers few athletes are as ambitious or multi-talented as he).

Adrian Day (M65) managed a gold in the 400m (helped by two or three faster guys dropping out at the last minute) in 69.97s, a bronze in the 200m in 29.95s (despite stumbling off the infamous last bend step) and a 9.50s in the 60m

Mike Salousti (M60) notched 29.93s in the 200m and just missed out on breaching the 9s mark in the 60m with a time of 9.08s, whilst Ivan Ross (M45) achieved a 29.35s in the 200m and 65.58s in the 400m

And finally youngster Israel Nworgu (M35) took home a silver with a  long jump of 5.39m and a bronze in the 60 hurdles (13.56).

It all bodes well for Heathside in the up-coming Vets League  (but we’ll need many more competitors of course)”
