if you are interested or check which of our north London venues is best for you and come along and introduce yourself.
You can usually take part straight away. Members will tell you what you need to know about the training groups available and what to do.
Christmas Party: London Heathside is pleased to invite members and friends to our annual Christmas Party, to be held at The Pavilion at North Middlesex Sports Club, 185a Park Road, N8 on Saturday 13th December, with traditional Christmas dinner, awards and a disco. Click here for more details.
Just to remind you, there is no limit to how many people can run for the club in the Met League, so everyone who turns up will be able to take part and, as there are 12 per team to score for the men and 6 for the women and we have 2 teams of each, almost everyone will get to score points for the club. We have had excellent turnouts for both Met League races so far so let’s try and keep that going for this one, especially let’s try and get more than 24 finishers for the men instead of more than 24 starters as has been the case both times so far!
A couple of notes about the course itself. The only dodgy bit is the start, which is far too narrow and will be a real mess (especially for the men), though at least it isn’t dangerous like the start at Claybury. Once you get off the start/finish field it becomes a challenging but not horribly difficult 2 lap run through the woods, until you emerge again for the final 100 metres or so sprint to the finish. Apparently it will be the same course as for last Saturday’s NLCCA champs except run in reverse. If anything the distance, for the men anyway, is slightly more than the advertised 8k.
Although I won’t be in the office until after the race I will be back from my holiday and will be racing. I will be driving from Finsbury Park leaving at 12.00 and may have a space or 2 in my car. If you would like a lift then don’t e-mail me as I won’t read it in time, instead wait until Friday 28th and then text or call me on 07881 541128. The same applies if you have any queries about the race, though in that case hopefully you will find someone else to ask before then. I look forward to seeing you and showing off my tan on the day.

Senior Women (6k) - 1.40PM
Senior Men (10k) - 2.10PM
The course will be as for the last couple of years, ie: 2x3k laps for the women and 2x2k laps followed by 2x3k laps for the men. Although not as difficult as the course which will be used for the National Champs in February, this route still involves 1 big hill per lap with plenty of other undulations. I suspect it will be pretty muddy too, certainly by the time the men finally get to race, so spikes or something similar will be needed.
I have entered 24 men and 16 women for the race, which should be enough given how many of us I know are going to be away in sunny Lanzarote or elsewhere, but best to turn up in good time in case we do run short of numbers. Those entered are pretty much based on who did the St Albans and Horsenden Relays and the first Met League. Anyone who did at least 2 of those races is definitely entered, those who did 1 probably are, and those who didn’t do any probably aren’t (though there are a couple of exceptions to that rule), but hopefully anyone else will be able to run, just under a pseudonym.
We usually meet alongside the track railings at the Highgate end of the track (ie: near the 100 Metres start), so I assume that will happen again. As I will not be there and nor will Jerry, and I expect Ivor will be marshalling, someone who gets there early will have to pick up the numbers (from the Highgate Harriers hut at the other end of the track) and make sure they remain available for others to take theirs when they turn up, ie: don’t take them round the Heath on your warm up! If we have to hand in any declarations/results then please make sure that is done too. Most importantly, please someone make sure you write down and keep a list of exactly who is actually running in each number and send me an e-mail accordingly, so that when I get the results I know who is who. If anyone feels brave enough to do a write up for the e-group, the website and the local press early next week, then that would be great too. I think Dieter will be there taking pictures so some words to go with them would be handy. I think that is everything, but please ask me tomorrow (after that it will be too late) if you have any questions. I hope you all have good and enjoyable races.
Venue is;-
Rowans Leisure Complex
10, Stroud Green Road
By Finsbury Park Station
London N4 2DF

Senior, Under 20 & Vet Women (6k approx) - 2.00PM
Senior, Under 20 & Vet Men (8k approx) - 2.45PM
In the women’s race it is 4 to score for the team and there are also individual medals for the first 3 vets. For the men it is 6 to score with again 3 individual vets medals. I don’t think there are vets team prizes (unfortunately for us) but I may be wrong.
The race HQ is the Hillingdon AC clubhouse on Bury Street in Ruislip and it is possible to park either on the road near the clubhouse or in the car park at the end of Reservoir Road, which is much closer to where the race starts and finishes. There are changing rooms and showers at the clubhouse if you require them and there will be refreshments there after the race. I don’t know if the course will be the traditional Ruislip course or more like the one that was used for last year’s Met League, but either way it will be quite hilly with much of it in woods (so totally the opposite of Wormwood Scrubs) and, despite the good forecast for the rest of this week, I imagine it will be quite muddy so spikes or similar would be advisable.
It isn’t the easiest venue to reach by tube, with the nearest station, Ruislip on the Met line, being a decent length warm-up jog away, so driving or getting a lift is probably preferable if possible, especially if you haven’t been before. I will be driving from Finsbury Park and have at least 1 space in my car, so please contact me if you would like a lift. I will be leaving either at 12 (if I am giving any women a lift) or 12.30 (if not). Any questions, please let me know. See you on Saturday.
Moving on to Sunday, the weekend road race was the Brighton 10K. This is always a high quality race and I suspect the conditions weren’t too bad this year. Julian led the 6 Heathsiders home though sadly he just missed out on a vets’ prize. Behind him the performances were somewhat up and down, though poor Laurence can certainly be excused his run as he was not feeling too good before the race and felt a lot worse after it.
The 3rd race of the weekend was the Sunday League Cross Country at Welwyn. This had the biggest Heathside turnout of the weekend and indeed was probably the best Heathside turnout for a Sunday League race other than one hosted by ourselves for several years. Bibsi had an excellent run in the women’s race, particularly as it was much longer than she has previously been used to, to gain our only top 10 finish of the day, while a full team of 5 followed her in spread over quite a long distance. By the way, the winner of the women’s race had finished 2nd in the NLCCA the previous day. Leading man, in his 1st race for the club for 4 or 5 years, was Rick, though Robert and Ricardo made him work all the way to the finish. Unusually for Heathside our top 4 finishers were all non-vets thus leading to us having a better result in the seniors’ team event than in the vets’ one. Results of these and other races as follows:

Unfortunately only 1 of the 5 W’s who led the women’s team home in the 1st race was able to race this time, and even Jackie wasn’t feeling all that well so didn’t have a great run. It was therefore left to cross country debutante Jaimie and promising junior Bibsi to take the top 2 places this time. Further back there were 2 close battles between Heathsiders with Ruth overtaking Fiona close to the finish and Barbara doing the same to Susie to claim the last place in the A team. With so many people missing it was not surprising that the team only managed 10th on the day, but they are still close enough to potentially finish 5th come the end of the season. Similarly the vets have slipped a place but they are still in a big 3 way battle for 3rd place overall.
Although the men’s field hadn’t increased in quantity to the same extent as the women’s, the general impression was that it had increased significantly in quality with almost all of us several positions down on our Claybury results. Martin and Richard had a close battle throughout with Martin finally edging home ahead, thus ensuring Richard kept up his record of being 2nd man home in all 4 major Cross Countrys so far this winter, while John was solidly 3rd Heathsider throughout. As I was always 4th man I didn’t realize quite how many other Heathsiders were queuing up behind me for much of the race, but in the end I managed to hold off Norman while Ed narrowly pipped Steve in the battle to be 1st youngster! Further down it was good to see Dave Browne racing again, if still well off his best, while Paul Mc and Israel would both have finished much higher had they not started about a minute late. The only slight disappointment was that for the 2nd race running we had more than 24 runners start but less than 24 finish, but at least this time the reasons (felt bad before the start, decided to give it a go, but soon felt worse) were less worrying than before. The team have narrowly held on to 4th overall, but with the teams behind a lot closer than those ahead there is still plenty of work to do to stay there, while the B team look quite solid in 6th or 7th in Division 2 as long as we can continue to get 20+ turning out. Needless to say the vets had another comfortable victory and look almost guaranteed to retain the title again already, while the vets B team might be in 5th too if we’d only marked Andy O as a vet at the 1st race.
Of the other races covered this week, the main stories are of broken bones. George had an excellent run in New York given that he had broken a collar bone only 2 weeks previously, almost enough to make me forgive him for not being entered as London Heathside which is why his result wasn’t in last week’s write-up! While those of you who have been around for a few years now may remember South African Piet Jacobs who ran for us regularly while he was in London a few years ago. He had a very serious climbing accident about a year ago which involved breaking a shoulder amongst other bones, but his run in Delhi, if not quite as good as his 10th in the Great North Run a few years back, suggests he is getting his form back. Results as follows:
Traversee des Alpilles multi-terrain races, St Remy-de-Provence (France), 1/11/08:

p.s. There was some kit left at the Scrubs after the race. If any of it belongs to you please contact the organisers on the number below:
There were a number of items left behind after yesterday's match at the Scrubs. We found a pile of clothing on the Scrubs itself and two pairs of spikes (one pair in a bag) left in the hall. The clothing (T-shirt, long sleeved top, shorts, trousers and bike/run "sleeves") was a smallish size. So too was at least one pair of the spikes, so these could have been left by one of the youngsters.
Could you please check whether any of your athletes are missing these items. They could give me a ring at home on 020 8560 5059.
Many thanks.
