Our Coaches

We are fortunate to benefit from the collective experience and expertise of a range of athletics coaches. All volunteer their time to help develop our club members. Our coaches are experienced, committed, fully qualified and DBS (disclosure and barring service) checked. Meet the team below!

Kim Butler

Qualification: Coach in Running Fitness

Events: Drills & warm up sessions.

A bit about Kim: I joined London Heathside in 2015 having found a love for running and volunteering at my local Highbury Fields parkrun three years earlier. As well as participating in track, field, road running and cross-country for the club, I also assist coach Jacob Howe and lead the warm-ups and running drills ahead of Tuesday evenings distance session.

London Heathside support my coaching development and in-turn I hope to share my learning to develop athletes at the club too.

Nilesh Goswami

Events: Endurance – from 800m to marathons. And cross-country.

A bit about Nilesh: I coach the YMCA sessions on Tuesday and loosely organise the 9am group on Sundays. I’ve also managed the road running section / Ron Jackson Trophy for the past two years.

I’ve been a member of London Heathside for over five years, but ran on my own for years before that – I always thought running clubs were only for elite runners. (I couldn’t have been more wrong.) Since joining the club I’ve completed three marathons and numerous other races from 1 mile to 20 milers, achieving a PB in all events. If only I’d joined earlier.

Jacob Howe

Qualification: UKA Level 2 endurance performance coach.

Events: Endurance – from 800m to marathons. And cross-country.

A bit about Jacob: I’ve been coaching at Finsbury Park track for more than a decade, and have been training there as a track and road runner for Heathside for even longer.

When I’m not encouraging people to run around tracks, across fields and along roads, I’m a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science.

Kabir Kemp

Events: Anything from 400m to 3000m.

A bit about Kabir: I’ve done every track and field event except for PV, but specialised in 800 and 1500. I started training for longer distance at Battersea park. I found a series of 2-mile races, gave it go, beat someone and came to the conclusion that shorter events were much more enjoyable than distance running. I loved the training, and got a real buzz from racing.

Mark.jpg

Mark Lawrence

Events: LJ, TJ, HJ, 100 & 200.

A bit about Mark: I’m a senior jumps coach, with an emphasis on long jump and triple jump. I’ve a particular interest in strength and conditioning training (often an overlooked side of athletics).

I’ve competed at club and international level, and you’ll still find me at Masters events.

Jerry Odlin

Qualification: Leadership in Running Fitness coach.

Events: Middle distance and cross country.

A bit about Jerry: A club member for over 50 years, and chairman for the past 15 years. Brings a huge amount of competitive experience at club, country, national and international level with personal bests ranging from 1:54 for 800m up to 65:08 for a half-marathon. Spent 5 years in the United States on the National Collegiate Athletic Association track and cross country circuit.

Martin Potter

Events: Endurance

A bit about Martin: I’ve been a member of the club for over 25 years. I’m a regular on the road, track and country, and have branched out into triathlon, completing the Ironman and represented Great Britain in my age group. I’ve been coaching on Wednesday nights for the last 10 years with my wife Jackie.

Jackie Wastell

Events: Endurance

A bit about Jackie: a stalwart of the club since 1985. I’ve competed internationally on numerous occasions and was overall winner of the inaugural Met League. Still racing today, including multi-sport events such as the Triathlon (including the Ironman). I’ve represented Great Britain at the World Age Group Champs. And I coach Wednesday night training with my husband Martin.
