English National Relay, North London Champs, and a few 10K’s

English Athletics XC National Relay Championships, Mansfield ;  4th Nov

At Mansfield  our Senior Women’s mixed it with the best of British to finish 28th out of 128 teams at the  England Athletics XC relays.

Kelly writes :  “ a very entertaining event and thoroughly enjoyed it. Good technical course and lots of crowd support on the course. There was even a track to warm up on and a dirty burger van for post run gains. Lets all have a crack at it next year !”

Mornington Chasers Regents Park 10K   5TH Nov

Andrew Conway achieved his fastest 10K for this year, inspired by Motorhead’s  Lemmy, and writes :

“ I was focussed on a sub 50 minute time, no matter how unrealistic that seemed to be as I lined up for the start along with 362 other runners. "Just run at 5K pace" I told myself. Regents Park is of course an attractive place to run. It's also pretty flat, with a 3 lap format and a water stop and a clock on the start / finish line. ..

I felt OK on lap 1 albeit a little chastened by the fact that I couldn't stay with the 50 minute pacer. My worries were justified one third of the way through: I had planned to go through the line in 16:00 but in the event the pacer was through in 16:33 whilst I went through, still behind, with 16:47 on the clock before adjustment. I actually felt more flexible on lap 2 though, telling myself to stay strong as, running my own race and trying to stay upright in order to maximise oxygen intake I drifted slightly further away from the pacer whilst observing other runners going backwards, as it were, around the 5K mark.

For me, the three lap format is favourable, or rather it is so long as I have something left in the tank after 6.66K, and I did. The mental focus was also good, and I held back just a little for the last 1K, when I "released" the last part of "Limb From Limb". Most think Lemmy's voice to be gruff, growly and controlled, but "Limb From Limb" is a sort of heavy metal "Bolero", so towards the end both band and lead singer go pretty much berserk. This was my inspiration and I started passing several runners including the 50 minute pacer, whom was probably easing up as I went past him with 100 to go “

The Leeds Abbey Dash is one of the fastest 10ks of the year.  We (as far as I can tell) just the one Heathsider running, with Corinna running a PB:
