Bill Awere, 19 – Assistant Coach
Bill Awere, athlete and coach
Bill Awere

“I’ve been a member of London Heathside for about 18 months. I wanted to get involved in coaching because as an athlete I was being coached myself, and I felt I had a good understanding of what people would want from a coach.

I went on the UK Athletics Level 1 course and gained a qualification that enables me to be an assistant coach. I really enjoyed the course; I liked the fact there were quite a few practical activities.

Now I’m using the knowledge and skills I’ve developed helping to coach a group of young Heathside athletes at Finsbury Park. Their ages range between 5 and 16.

I’ve booked up for the Level 2 course, to learn more and so that I’ll be qualified to lead training sessions.

Coaching is fun! It’s nice to know that you’re helping young people to advance and develop their abilities. What I would you say to anyone else who might be thinking about getting involved in coaching is “Do it!” - It helps you as well as helping other people.”
