Triathlon

It’s official – Heathside has embraced the multi-sports raze and set up a triathlon section, with the help of British Triathlon.

As of spring 2013 London Heathside is affiliated to British Triathlon so that you can, and should, enter any races under the club name. After all, we also have club tri kit on offer.

Joining British Triathlon as an individual member is worth the cost if you do several triathlons each year – you can get a discount by clicking on the Join Now image and London Heathside gets £5 cashback per membership entry completed in this fashion.

Gabi Johnson and Ruth Miller were instrumental in setting up the new triathlon section, so our thanks go to them in particular for this initiative. Triathlon Championships 2017

This year the triathlon championships will be based on performances in two events, with a slight twist. The two events are the Hillingdon Triathlon and the Hertfordshire Triathlon (Sprint distance). Both of these events have multiple dates you can enter, Hillingdon has 3 and Herts has 2. 

If you enter each one more than once then you get a chance to improve on your previous time, or if you can't make one of the events in the series then there is a chance to compete in one of the other ones.

Get involved – Training

Running training is obviously well covered by the club given that this remains its focus – please consult the Training page in the main menu for further information.

For those of you interested in triathlon specific swim training sessions I have been in touch with a the coach who now runs sessions at Park Road Lido in Crouch End N8.

These are lead by Mihai Paduraru, an experienced level 2 triathlon coach, who intends to run them all year round (the pool is heated to around 23C all year).

These sessions run weekly on Friday mornings, from 7am until 8am and have the exclusive use of a lane of the pool.
The cost is £10 per session, which you can pay directly to Mihai before or after the session, or if you prefer you can pay by bank transfer or direct debit by arrangemnet with him.
For entry to the pool at Park Road leisure Centre, tell reception that you are there for the triathlon swim sessions and they will let you through. (You do not need to pay for entry.)

The lido is heated all year round to 23C/24C, so you won't necessarily need a wetsuit during the warmer months. However, for some people (including myself) it can get a little cold when taking instruction between drills, and given the English summer it rarely gets too hot. (NB it's good to practice in a wetsuit regularly. Most races require you wear one and the buoyancy experience is very different to swimming without one. It's also good to practice getting it off in a hurry!)

Please note these sessions are not suitable for complete beginners, and you must be at least 18 years old. You should be able to swim front crawl fairly competently, the session will be warm up, drills, and maybe a set of intervals. You can bring your own swim aids (fins, pads, and boards).

 Thursday Morning Cycling: Chatlaps

Heathsiders and keen triathletes Hannah Jordan and Shaan Haque lead a cycling group every Thursday morning in a friendly Chatlaps session around Regents Park. This is a mixed gender group and aims to maintain a social pace of about 30kph (easier than it sounds in a group!) whilst chatting and enjoying themselves. They meet at 6.00AM for a 6.05AM roll out opposite the gates to the running track on the Outer Circle (see on Google Maps). They cycle counter clockwise, so latecomers can cycle clockwise to join up. They usually finish at 7.00 (plenty of time to shoot off to work) and often enjoy a post session coffee in a local cafe. Sunday Long Cycle Rides
Occasonally Heathsiders organise group rides on Sundays which are publicised on the Club Facebook page.
If you'd like something more regular, I can recommend Muswell Hill Peleton: https://www.facebook.com/groups/muswellhillpeleton/ which is absolutely free. They do group rides on Sundays, leaving from outside Muswell Hill Bikes at 8am, well worth it. Their average speed is around 17-19mph for 40-50 miles or so. If that is too fast, then there is also Islington Cycle Club (ICC) and Finsbury Park CC that run a variety of rides for differing levels of ability, both of which have very reasonable membership fees. All of these come highly recommended by Heathside members who take part with these clubs.
