Frequently Asked Questions

Am I too slow?
a) Juniors: No! Any young athlete from age 6 and upwards is welcome. Come along to the appropriate training session and find out more.
b) Adult road-runners: We have runners of all speeds; all that we ask is that you can run for half an hour continuously (regardless of speed). If you don't think you can do this, why not try the simple 'getting going' programme on our beginners page?

Do I have to become a member before I come along?
No. If you're thinking about joining you are welcome to come along for two or three weeks to try us out before signing up. Of course, you can join now, simply go to the membership page.

Will I need any special footware?
For most of Heathside training sessions you will be fine with trainers. More experienced runners and track and field competitors might want to consider more specialist shoes:

  • Cross-country Spiked cross-country shoes can become useful as the winter season progresses. Alternatives are fell running or trail shoes.
  • Track & field Track spikes are useful for sprinters and middle distance runners. Field athletes can acquire shoes designed for specific events.
  • Road runners Faster road runners often race is special lightweight shoes.

One thing to remember is that trainers lose their cushioning and support as they get older; it is a good idea to try to replace your training shoes fairly regularly to avoid injury.

    What about racing?
No-one has to compete, and many Heathsiders enjoy their training, but almost never race. However, there are plenty of opportunities to race & compete if you want to, including:

  • Junior athletics and running
  • Adult road-running
  • Cross-country
  • Track & field

    Will I be coached?
London Heathside has numerous UK Athletics coaches. Young athletes will always be working under the guidance of a coach. Training for adult runners is often directed by a coach, but is more informal. However, coaches are willing to give extra advice if you want it.

I'm just visiting, can I join in?
Absolutely, if you are just passing through London, or staying for a few weeks, then come along and join in our training. London Heathside is keen to establish links with other clubs, particularly those overseas.
