Rob Jackson Road Race Championship 2008
Rob Jackson 1944-2006
Rob Jackson 1944-2006

Heathside has organised a club championship based upon a series of road races run throughout the year over varying distances in the Southeast. Runners compete for the Rob Jackson Memorial Road Race Championship trophies, one for women and one for men. Rob was a keen road-runner and regular participant in club training runs and races who died suddenly late in 2006.

Rankings in the both the male and female series can be found using the links to the right of the page.

Rules

  • All Heathside finishers score championship points. 1st Heathside man in each race gets 30 points, 2nd 29, 3rd 28 and so on down to a minimum of 1 point. In the women's championship 20 points are awarded for the 1st finisher, 19 for the 2nd etc.
  • There are three races at each distance: 5 miles, 10 km, 10 miles and half-marathon. You score points in each race you complete, but only your best two scores out of three at any one distance will count in your final tally. If you have scored a good tally of points in two races at a particular distance, it may be worth considering whether running a third race at the same distance is likely to significantly improve your points score. For example if you only scored 1 or 2 points in a race like the Crouch End 10K, which had 63 Heathside finishers in 2003, a similar performance in the Dulwich 10K, where only 18 Heathsiders ran in 2003, would gain you many more scoring points.
  • When you run a second or third race of the same distance "improvement" points are awarded: The man whose time improves by the biggest margin gets an additional 30 points, the next 29 etc; in the women's championship a maximum of 20 points are added. A slower time will still gain points just for repeating the distance as it will still be ranked on the "improvement scale" - so e.g. 5 seconds slower will give your more points than 5 minutes slower (as long as someone else's deterioration was between those two times).
  • Your "improvement" points are calculated on the difference between your first race at any distance and any subsequent race at the same distance, calculated at the end of the series , so that your improvement compared to other Heathside runners is maximised. The improvement points are calculated independently of your position points in each race.
