Club Races

Throughout the year London Heathside hosts its own races - some open to the public, and some club member only races. If not taking part, members are always encouraged to help in the marshalling and other tasks for these events. See the section on Volunteering.

1. The Heathside Five
The Heathside 5 started in the ‘80s as the Muswell Hill 5 but was renamed when London Heathside was formed after the merger in 2000. It is a five mile race consisting of three-and-a-half laps of the carriageway within Finsbury Park.

It usually takes place on the 1st Sunday of March. It is a hilly course, made even more difficult by the fact that it starts at the bottom of a hill and finishes near the top! However, the course records are very impressive as both are held by international athletes, Bashir Hussain and Andrea Whitcombe.

2. The Hampstead Mid-Summer 10K
The Midsummer 10k started up in the 1990s as a midweek evening race over 2 laps of Hampstead Heath extension, but when it became more popular it was decided to move it to a Sunday morning and make it 3 shorter laps to reduce problems with traffic. It takes place on the closest Sunday to June 21st and starts on the roads towards the bottom of the extension, finishing on the grass a bit further up.

It isn’t a flat course, so it is quite a challenging race, but is still popular with both Heathsiders and other local runners.

3. The London Heathside Club Handicap
Normally the third Tuesday night in July. A fun event for club members only, where in a combined 5K race, men and women compete for separate awards in a run around beautiful Highgate Woods.

The format is that the slower runners start off the course a pre-determined number of minutes and seconds before the scratch runners. This time is their handicap time and is assigned by the handicapper who bases his estimates on recent form and is completely unmoved by tales of injury, illness, training woes unless they are written on the back of a large denomination banknote!

The idea being that the faster runners chase the slower runners trying to catch them before the finish line. If the handicapper has done his job accurately AND everyone runs to perfect form, they should all reach the finish line together! The evening normally ends in a prize-giving ceremony in the nearby Woodman pub.

4. The Club Track & Field Championships

This is a relatively new Heathside promotion, having only started in 2008.
It takes place over two Tuesday evenings in June or July at Finsbury Park track with three track events and two or three field events on each evening.

It is mainly just for fun and to give people a chance to try out new events without the pressure of league competition. There is however a prize for the best all round athlete, for which you have to compete in at least one sprint, one longer race, one jump and one throw, with the times/heights/distances converted into points using decathlon tables and age gradings so that members of all ages and both genders can compete on a level playing field.
